Dental Implants

Dental implants offer a clinically proven & safe solution to getting a great smile back

Are you missing one or more teeth? Would you like to be able to eat the foods you love or to smile with confidence once again?  With the placement of dental implants at Thorndon Dental, you now can. Our dentists will take the time to carefully assess your current state of dental, bone and overall health, before surgically inserting implants. Our team can return your natural smile and function seamlessly and comfortably.

What are dental implants?

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root, usually made of titanium and surgically inserted into the jaw to replace the entire tooth. Because dental implants are bio-compatible, the jawbone heals around the implant creating a powerful foundation for your new teeth. A personalized dental crown, bridge, or denture is then placed on top of the implants. This replaces the entire missing tooth without impacting on the surrounding teeth, and it looks, functions and feels just like a natural tooth. We use only the best dental implant brands to ensure you have peace of mind knowing your investment will last for decades.

Dental implants feel much more natural than alternative solutions. They can also last for several times longer than traditional options. For this reason, our dentists recommend dental implants as the best way to replace missing teeth.

Advantages of dental implants

Implants act and function just like your natural teeth by mimicking the root of your lost tooth. Once restored with a crown they provide a whole host of benefits including:

  • prevention of damage to adjacent teeth
  • they appear ‘life like’ and only you and the dentist will know the difference
  • preserve bone- dental implants protect your jaw from further residual bone loss
  • preserve your natural bite without affecting the rest of your teeth’s alignment
  • maintenance just like regular teeth, brush and floss as usual

Types of dental implants

Dental implants are a safe and reliable choice, no matter what type of tooth loss is present.

Single Tooth Implants

For patients who require a single tooth implant, a single titanium fixture can be inserted during a minimally invasive procedure. Once the site has healed, a fixed artificial tooth (implant crown and abutment) can be attached to the surgically placed fixture to restore your dentition and improve improve normal function.

Immediate Implants

Immediate implant placement is when an implant is placed at the same time as the natural tooth is extracted. It is then restored with a temporary crown and the patient goes away on the same day without a gap.

Implant Bridges

An implant-supported bridge is similar to a regular dental bridge, but it is supported by implants and not by natural teeth. In most cases when an implant-supported bridge is used, two implants are placed in the jawbone for three missing teeth, with the crowns connected to each other to form one piece. This allows for improved oral health simply by not needing to rely on adjacent healthy teeth to serve as anchors.

Implant Retained Dentures

An implant-supported denture is a type of overdenture that is supported by and attached to implants.

An implant-supported denture is used when a person doesn’t have any teeth in the jaw, but has enough bone in the jaw to support implants. An implant-supported denture has special attachments that snap onto attachments on the implants.
